About Chala Gist Blog — Real Hostel Fixes From Someone Who’s Lived It

Why I Started This Blog

I still remember my first week in a hostel room. The tap in the bathroom wouldn’t stop dripping, my “reading table” was a wobbly plastic chair, and the guy in the next room told me the whole block gets mosquito bites like a national service by 9pm. Nobody hands you a manual for any of this. You just figure it out — usually the hard way, usually after wasting money on the wrong solution first.

That’s basically why Chala Gist Blog exists.

I’m Bassey Chala, and I started this blog because I got tired of watching students — myself included — pay artisans thousands of naira for problems that a ₦2,000 fix could have solved in twenty minutes. Or worse, ignore a small problem until it became a big, expensive one. Nobody was writing about student life in a way that actually matched what a Nigerian hostel room or self-contain looks like. Most of what’s online is either written for a different country entirely, or it’s too generic to be useful when you’re standing there with the actual leaking tap in front of you.

What This Blog Is About

Chala Gist Blog is a practical, no-nonsense resource for Nigerian university students and young tenants who want to make their hostel rooms and self-contains more livable — without spending money they don’t have. We cover five main things:

  • Hostel & Self-Contain DIY — fixing, building, and improving your space with your own two hands
  • Student Budgeting & Money Hacks — stretching every naira further
  • Study & Productivity — setting yourself up to actually get work done in a small room
  • Campus Survival Guide — the unwritten rules nobody tells freshers
  • Student Side Hustles & Income — realistic ways to earn while you study

Every post is written from actual experience — things I’ve done myself, prices I’ve personally paid, mistakes I’ve personally made so you don’t have to repeat them. When I include a price, it’s a real Nigerian market price, not a guess. When I recommend a tool or material, it’s something that’s genuinely available at your local hardware shop or Bumper market, not some imported thing you’ll never find.

Who This Blog Is For

If you’re a university student living in a hostel, a young person renting your first self-contain, or honestly anyone trying to make a small, low-budget space work harder for you — this blog was built for you. You don’t need any special skills or experience. Most of what we cover requires nothing more than what you can find in a local hardware shop and about thirty minutes of your time.

My Promise to You

I won’t recommend anything I haven’t tried myself or wouldn’t genuinely suggest to a younger sibling moving into hostel for the first time. Every guide is written to be honest about cost, honest about how long things take, and honest about when a DIY fix is actually the right call versus when you genuinely need to call a professional. This blog isn’t sponsored by any hardware brand, and I’m not trying to sell you anything you don’t need — I’m just trying to save you the stress I went through.
